“Divine Savior’s most valuable contribution is providing quality and compassionate health care locally.”
— Dr. James Self

Dr. James Self enjoys the challenges and rewards of working in orthopedics and helping his patients regain their strength and mobility.

“I have had many patients, young and old, who have been seriously limited by injuries, and seeing them return to activities has been very rewarding,” Dr. Self says.

As a careful listener and observer, Dr. Self works hard to collect and analyze information to help him get a big picture view. He put his analytical skills to use when he worked as a mechanical engineer for a few years before going to medical school, and he continues to use those skills in his medical practice today.

Dr. Self says the best advice he was ever given was to “get all of the education that you think you need, and then go back and get some more.”

It’s advice he’s followed. He actually got interested in the health care field while studying for his master’s degree in Engineering. One of his professors at the time was working on artificial muscle, which exposed him to the idea of a career in medicine and led him to change course professionally.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Dr. Self enjoys the small town atmosphere of Portage. He also loves Wisconsin and its four seasons and all of the outdoor activities offered here. In his free time, he likes spending time in northern Wisconsin, working with his hands, and doing repair and mechanic jobs in the garage.
