When foot pain occurs, you are often reminded of it with each step throughout the day. Your level of activity can be reduced, and accompanying weight gain and loss of conditioning only compounds the problem.

Divine Savior Healthcare is pleased to have on staff a board certified podiatrist, Dr. Stephen Murphy. Foot problems were an obstacle Dr. Murphy had to overcome himself. Although you may not run Ultra Trail Runs like he now does, Dr. Murphy takes a personal interest in each of his patients to ensure the most optimal recovery.

Prior to surgery, Dr. Murphy will evaluate your medical history and personal circumstance. Shoe inserts, physical therapy, smoking cessation, weight loss or other solutions are often pursued before surgery. Unique complications that can occur in diabetic patients are a special concern to Dr. Murphy.

Depending on the severity of the condition, you may decide together that a surgical solution is best. Most foot surgeries are minor in nature. Because of this, a majority of procedures are done as an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day. Most outpatient procedures are performed under twilight anesthesia or sedation, which means you are completely relaxed and most likely will not remember the operation. For more complex operations, you may be required to stay overnight.

After surgery, you may be able to bear weight on the foot. Appropriate assistive devices will be prescribed such as a walking shoe or cast. You may need crutches to get around afterwards. Dr. Murphy will help you prepare ahead of time so you know what to expect.

While some may require physical therapy to strengthen the foot, others may simply require rest or in-home range of motion or stretching exercises. Your type of work will also be a factor in your recovery. A desk job will be easier to return to than a job which requires walking or standing. Physically demanding jobs will require even more consideration.
