MY STORY

“A true professional does his best, even when he does not want to’ is the foundation in all work-related relationships. Although I cannot always be the best, I do try to do the best I can. As a father, I feel a strong responsibility to take as good care of another parent’s child as I would want and ‘expect’ a professional to take care of my own child.”
-Matt Bekkedal, LAT

Matt had many role models in the field of sports medicine which inspired him to make his career in the field.

“Ted Harris, a former Legion baseball coach and man-of-all-trades, unknowingly encouraged my interest in the field of athletic training. As I watched him tape my ankle before baseball games, I became very interested in the thought of combining baseball and the body,” Matt says.

“Patrick Sexton, UW-La Crosse’s Head Athletic Trainer was a significant mentor in my life. I respect and appreciate the sacrifices he made for me and my college class very much.”

“Dean Kleinschmidt, the Head Athletic Trainer for the New Orleans Saints was a fabulous mentor. His charisma and charm were a joy to learn from by observing. The concept of carrying a notebook in my pocket to ‘keep track’ of things remains a common practice of mine, even today.”

“Eugene Bekkedal, my grandfather, died in December of 2009. I miss him more now in the years since he’s been gone than during the 38 years I had with him. His model of integrity, professionalism and calm demeanor serve as a standard which I hope to achieve, someday, before we meet again,” Matt adds.

In the meantime, Matt has focused on his family and his profession. After earning his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse, Matt continued on for his Master of Science in Athletic Training.

“Divine Savior Healthcare provides state-of-the-art health care to our area,” Matt tells us. “The things we do here and services we provide to our patients are unsurpassed. No longer do the citizens of our area have to travel to big cities in the area for quality health care. We provide excellent health care and services to our patients with a small town atmosphere because ‘life is extraordinary.”

It is apparent that Matt is dedicated to his profession. He is equally as dedicated to his faith and his family as well.

“My main interest is to develop my relationship with God, my wife and my children,” Matt says. “Work is also important as one can never learn enough, nor completely understand the human body as we use it move, create and perform.”
